Indoor Gardening

Indoor gardening is an easy and enjoyable way to grow a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, herbs, flowers and houseplants in an environmentally sound manner regardless of the weather outside.  This type of gardening is a delightful way to bring fresh, natural ingredients to your meals or beautiful growth to your home on a year-round basis.  There are several types of gardening which can be done indoors and these range from simple methods to more advanced, efficient systems.  A popular system is the indoor smart garden.

Indoor GardeningThe three primary methods of indoor gardening are container gardening, hydroponics and terrarium cultivation.  The most common indoor gardening method is container gardening, through the use of pots, soil, fertilizer and grow lighting.  Another simple way to produce healthy, organic plants is hydroponic growing, through the use of small containers, plant food and water in lieu of soil, and grow lighting.  Hydroponics offers numerous benefits over more traditional methods and is usually used to grow vegetables and flowers.  Terrarium cultivation is a popular way to produce beautiful gardens of various collections of plants for display and enjoyment purposes, through the use of a terrarium (usually glass), soil, fertilizer and natural lighting.

Depending on your needs and preferences, various levels of complexity of indoor gardening can be done.  Many of the different methods of indoor plant cultivation will be subject to the degree of investment of your time and/or money that you choose to invest.  Simple indoor gardening can be done very inexpensively and will require varying degrees of your time and physical space to be successful.  Great looking indoor gardens can be easily made with some unique planters and accessories of various types.  More sophisticated, technologically advanced systems may take more money to complete the initial set-up, but may require less of your time and available space on an ongoing basis.

Some of the advantages of indoor gardening, over more traditional outdoor methods, are temperature and light control, weed control, disease control and limited or no use of pesticides.  Hydroponics methods also offer faster growing times of up to 50%, lower ongoing maintenance, smaller space required for growing and plant diseases will only affect one plant as opposed to a whole row of plants.

Various forms of indoor gardening have been done by many civilizations over thousands of years, frequently due to poor outdoor growing conditions.  Hydroponic techniques have also been used for thousands of years by civilizations such as the Babylonians, Aztecs, Chinese and Egyptians, although it was originally done outdoors.  Over time, hydroponics gradually moved indoors and became more sophisticated.

The various methods available for indoor cultivation of nearly any type of plants, as well as the many benefits over outdoor gardening, make indoor gardening a healthy and productive hobby, pastime or even career for millions of people.  Indoor Gardening is an easy way to grow fresh vegetables, herbs, flowers and houseplants.  Container gardening, hydroponics & terrarium cultivation have many advantages over more traditional methods.  Given the many options of simplicity or complexity available and the types of indoor and patio plants you can grow, indoor gardening provides nearly limitless possibilities.
